If you live in Ibiza town, you have surely seen cockroaches, but don't panic: they have a solution. At Nova Control, we carry out treatments for all types of pests, cockroaches being one of the most common. However, it is important to point out that it is not always the same species of cockroaches, and even when it is the same species, it does not always have to be the same environment. In other words, each treatment must take into account the species, the environment affected and the degree of infestation.
Broadly speaking, there are 3 species that can be found on the islands of Ibiza and Formentera: the oriental black cockroach (Blatta orientalis), the Germanic cockroach (Blatella germanica) and the American cockroach (Periplaneta americana).
In the service carried out in these images, the pest species was the American cockroach (Periplaneta americana), and the affected area was the underground part of a housing estate in Ibiza town.

The American cockroach can be seen in homes and warehouses, as well as in garages and sewers. They are gregarious, but not social insects, i.e. they live in groups, but do not have elaborate social relationships like ants or wasps. They are photosensitive, so they tend to stay in dark environments, and if they need to, they will come out of them to look for food when it is dark. As they naturally shy away from light, seeing them during the day is usually a clear indicator that there is a major pest out of sight to the untrained eye, but which will probably start to appear as soon as a check is made in suitable sheltered areas, i.e. drains, false ceilings, manholes, etc.

As with the other two species of cockroaches that often act as pests in Ibiza and Formentera, the American cockroach also goes through different sizes, which it overcomes as it "sheds" a moult to acquire a larger one. While they are in this development process, we refer to them as nymphs.
As long as the environment in which they are present meets the basic requirements of light, temperature, humidity and no human activity, American cockroaches will not necessarily seek to hide, as they will not feel the need to do so. In this case, as they were present in an underground area with very little human activity, and with ideal environmental conditions, they were at ease in the columns (pillars) of the building itself.
