There are several species of ants that act as pests on Ibiza and Formentera. One of the most difficult to combat is the Argentine ant (Linepithema humile), a species of ant which, apart from acting as a pest, is also an invasive species. Originally from South America, through human activity it has spread to all continents, with the exception of Antarctica.
Its classification as an invasive species is due to its ability to reproduce and disperse, among other factors, thanks to the creation of "supercolonies", consisting of hundreds or even thousands of nests, with their respective queens, connected and cooperating with each other, instead of competing and attacking each other (as usually happens with other ant species). This lack of intraspecific competition (i.e. fighting between different colonies of the same species), added to their aggressiveness and displacement of local ant species from their home range, has made this ant not only a public health problem, but also an environmental problem in some areas.
With what has been said so far, we can already get an idea of the "chaos" that can reign in those homes, businesses or establishments where this species of ant makes an appearance when it settles and takes over the place. Consequently, early treatment, without waiting until the pest is completely out of control, can help us a lot to avoid having to assume a higher cost later, to try to combat a pest that we know may have a contingent of hundreds of queens that keep the nest active. This "rearguard" may even be located outside the boundaries of the affected property.
The use of gel baits is one of the corrective measures to be implemented for the correct control of this particular species.
As far as feeding is concerned, they are omnivorous. Their reproductive cycle takes place inside the nest, that is, unlike other species, they do not "fly" outside the nest in order to mate. An Argentine ant queen has a life expectancy of around 5 years, and it is estimated that she can lay around 4,500 eggs during her lifetime.
