Undoubtedly, one of the environments most prone and conducive to the presence of rats and other types of rodents are industrial environments. Even more so, when in such environments there are abundant quantities of food available, as is the case in food industry warehouses, industrial estates in general or waste treatment plants. It should be noted here that for a rodent, the word food ranges from products for human consumption in their original packaging, to organic waste, food scraps, wiring, etc.
Rats are mammals belonging to the rodent order (Rodentia). The rat genus (Rattus) comprises around 60 different species, although broadly speaking, there are two species that will be of interest (and affect us) as pests: the black rat (Rattus rattus) and the sewer rat (Rattus norvergicus); both with a distribution that covers the entire planet, with the exception of the Arctic and some sub-Arctic areas.
One of the main measures for rodent pest control is biocidal bait. This is installed in bait holders equipped with a system that prevents accidental or intentional manipulation by third parties, as well as being properly marked and numbered.
The wide global distribution of the two main rat pest species testifies to their adaptability, resilience and high reproductive rate. Therefore, when dealing effectively with a rat pest problem, it is important to make a good diagnosis of the problem, and implement a control that includes several corrective measures. These measures can affect the work of the pest control company's technicians as well as the employees in the work environment and the affected facilities themselves. That is to say, it is true that we are responsible for eliminating the pest as the company providing the service, but it is also true that if we do not attend to the needs (in the case of indicating that this is necessary), referring to avoiding generating certain types of waste or incorrect waste management; or the fact of not undertaking reforms such as sealing access points from the outside or from the public sanitation network (sewage), the work done by our pest control technicians will only serve to momentarily mitigate the problem. This is because the source and source of attraction of the rat infestation will still be there. Chronifying a problem (whatever the pest), maintaining a constant dependence on biocides, is not a solution to the problem.
Therefore, to combat a rodent infestation, it is necessary to know how to study each case well, and to tackle the problem on all fronts in the appropriate way.

In this entry, we will try to summarise the use of rodenticide bait holders and baits as an integral part of rat pest control. The bait holders are subject to revisions that are determined both by the objective needs of rodent control, as well as by the current regulations. These regulations, which in turn are determined according to the active material and its concentration, depending on the bait used. That is to say, there are different types of bait, including some placebos which are not toxic; the latter being useful when we want to monitor the presence of rodents without the need to use a product containing a biocide.
In addition, the telephone number for cases of accidental poisoning and the pictograms warning of the toxicological danger of the rodenticide contained in the bait holder should also be indicated.

Most of the rodenticide products currently in use act with a certain "delayed effect", i.e. they die after a period of time after ingestion, not immediately. This prevents rats and mice from associating the product as a toxic substance, thus improving its efficacy. However, if there is no rotation of products with different types of active ingredients and formats (paste, foam, blocks...), tolerances and rejections can develop. One aspect to take into account with this type of bait is that as it takes a certain amount of time to take effect, rodents end up dying in places that are not always easily accessible or visible.
A good pest technician must not only know how to diagnose and apply the service correctly, but must also know how to deal with the different situations that arise, such as the detection and collection of corpses if necessary.
As mentioned above, the pen holders are designed to prevent, as far as possible, manipulation by third parties. They are rigid PVC boxes, fitted with a lockable locking mechanism and anchorage points for floors or walls. However, it is always important to pay special attention to those environments where children or pets may be susceptible to tampering.
Baits are always installed after a previous study of the area, and taking into account the existing problem, rather than other aspects, such as whether or not they are easy to access, or if it will take x amount of time to carry out the inspection. Poorly installed baits in inadequate quantities (both upwards and downwards) can only be synonymous with inefficient pest control.
