We are already in the midst of the transition from winter to spring, and although spring officially begins on the 20th of this month, the recent spell of mixed weather—with sunshine, rain and milder temperatures—is already creating the perfect breeding ground for this pest to become active and spread.

As with many other species of insects, mosquitoes have a stage in their life cycle during which they exist as larvae. These larvae have no wings, cannot fly, and do not bite. In fact, they do not even live in the same environment as the adults: they are born and develop in water.
The females lay their eggs in places where there are pools of stagnant water. The larvae hatch and live in this environment until they are mature enough to emerge to the surface as adults, having gone through the chrysalis stage.
During their adult stage, they tend to remain inactive in damp areas or dense vegetation during the middle of the day – that is, the hottest part of the day – becoming active at dusk and during the night. Both adults, males and females, feed in the same way: on nectar and other sugary juices from flowers and plants.
But if they feed on nectar, why do they bite? To reproduce. Only females feed on the blood of other living creatures, and they do so for reproductive purposes; in other words, they do not feed on blood. When ‘mosquitoes bite us’, it is actually only the females that are biting us. In fact, the fact that their diet is based on flower nectar means that mosquitoes, apart from being a nuisance in our environment, play an important role as pollinators within ecosystems.
Returning to the females, they resort to blood as part of their reproductive cycle: once fertilised, they need the proteins present in the blood of their victims for the development of their eggs.
