Water tanks: when dirt is not always visible.

Whatever the intended use of a tank, i.e. water for consumption, irrigation, etc., it is inevitable that it will end up accumulating dirt and microorganisms, unless a cleaning and disinfection plan is being implemented. In any case, one thing must be clear, and that is that it is very difficult (if not impossible) to evaluate the real state of the water and the tank itself with the naked eye. That is to say, both macroscopic dirt, or that which can be detected with the naked eye, and micro-oscopic dirt (for example bacteria such as Legionella), can only be evaluated and detected in all its magnitude when work begins on cleaning and disinfecting the tank. Macroscopic dirt can go largely unnoticed as it is attached to the walls, ceiling, floor... or suspended in the water itself at low levels, giving the impression of being "clean", when in fact as soon as you start to scrub, the water starts to become cloudy. On the other hand, micro-organisms are not detectable with the naked eye, and their identification is only possible by taking samples and then analysing them in the laboratory. It is vital that in this part of the process, a series of protocols are always respected to avoid contamination by altering the original sample. In short: lifting the lid of the tank and the water looks "clear" means just that, i.e. that the water is clear. But it does not corroborate that it is fit for consumption, nor does it indicate that the tank itself does not contain a large amount of sediment and other types of dirt, which will end up forming a dense layer of sludge when the water is drained and physical cleaning is applied to the walls, ceiling and floor.


As mentioned above, the amount of sludge that was apparently "not there" can become surprising once the dirt starts to be scraped off, and there is not enough water in which to dilute it.
In order to carry out a good physical cleaning, both of the floor and of the walls and ceiling, apart from "scraping" with brushes, it is necessary to apply pressurised water by means of a spray gun. Obviously, as all the dirt embedded in the walls, ceiling and floor is loosened, it will accumulate on the floor, from which it is extracted by pumps capable of absorbing the resulting sludge. From this it can already be deduced that there are a series of means and equipment that require a certain degree of professionalism for their correct handling. Equipment and means which, in addition, must be capable of being handled correctly in such particular spaces as tanks, where access is usually complicated, and sometimes, the design of the installation itself (especially when they are of old construction), has not contemplated a minimum height, falls on the floor, etc., which would facilitate the execution of the work.
The cleaning and disinfection of a water tank, with the importance it has for the health of people and their environment, should never be delegated to a company outside Environmental Health, and of which we have no references in these services.





Once the physical cleaning phase has been completed, chemical cleaning comes into play, i.e. the elimination of all the microorganisms that the tank itself, as well as the water, may contain. This process, depending on the installations, can be done in different ways (hyperchlorination, thermal shock). The effectiveness of the work is certified by the collection of water samples at the terminals of the facilities and their subsequent analysis in an independent laboratory.
